UPDATE: Congress Set to hear News Bailout

Congress will meet tomorrow to discuss the solutions to the financial woes of newspapers.

Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney (D-N.Y.), Chair of the House Joint Economic Committee (JEC), will convene a hearing “to examine contraction in the newspaper industry, the economic impact of the changing media landscape, as well as the future of the industry at large,” according to an announcement. The hearing, titled “The Future of Newspapers: The Impact on the Economy and Democracy,” will take place Thursday, at 10:00 am in the Cannon House Office Building.

Several legislators in the senate have kicked around the idea of a newspaper bailout, including former presidential candidate Sen. John Kerry (D-Ma). The Newspaper Revitalization Act

The hearing comes just five days after President Obama expressed support for some sort of bailout for the news industry, although he remained uncommitted to any specific sort of legislation.
