Honoring the Fallen

Posted on September 20, 2009

If you have an hour to spare today take a look at “Journalists Killed in the Line of Duty.” Legendary media personalities, including Peter Jennings and Tom Brokaw, tell the stories of seven reporters that died in 2002-03 while on the job. The documentary features an especially touching tribute to Daniel Pearl, the Wall Street Journal reporter that was decapitated by terrorists in 2002.

The documentary may be more relevant than ever. More than 60 journalists have lost their lives in the line of duty in 2008–and not just in war zones. The violence is closer to home than one might think; five reporters were murdered in Mexico last year. All of these reporters lost their lives, while investigating the country’s increasingly violent drug cartels. The violence has not stopped there. Two members of the prosecutor’s office have been murdered, while investigating the murder of crime reporter Armando Rodriguez.

The documentary serves as a touching tribute to those who gave their lives in search of the truth. In a country as free as America the battlefield seems the only conceivable place for a journalist to die in the line of duty. It is important to remember, however, that many reporters the world over rise each day to a warzone–yes, even in peacetime.
